The age-old question of what insets to use in your Entrance Matting system in order to combat the ingress of dirt and moisture and prevent it from entering your building, polyamide, or polypropylene? This blog will look to shine some light on this matter and give better insight into both so that the next time you are choosing your Entrance Matting, you can make it a perfect fit for you!
Importance of Entrance Matting
Entrance Matting is the first line of defence in keeping the dirt and debris from entering the building and it can remove up to 80% of the dirt, installing the right type of Entrance Matting System will play an important role in reducing slips and trips, improving air quality, making the building more cost efficient & aesthetic, and finally retaining clients.
It’s important to understand that there are various types of inserts that are purpose made to be installed either internally or externally. Bristle brush insert for example is typically used externally to combat coarse dirt and grit. Typically ribbed in design, rubber or synthetic inserts add anti-slip properties, these inserts have excellent scraping qualities in removing soil, as a result their characteristics also allow it to be used both internally and externally. Finally, we come to the fibre inserts these are used for internal environments only, but play a crucial role in the removal and retention of foot borne moisture. This can be further broken down into Polypropylene and Polyamide both of which have strong propositions.
What is Polyamide?
Polyamide is a crystalline material that comes in various classes such as Nylon 6, 66 and 46. They absorb moisture at levels substantially higher than most other engineering plastics. Different classes of nylons have different strengths. Nylon 46 and 66 are similar in that they are good at absorbing dry dirt whereas Nylon 6 would be more dimensionally stable when moisture absorption is the primary concern. The high-quality polyamide fibre products absorb up to 5.4L/m² of moisture, allowing highly effective performance even in times of inclement weather and heavy traffic. Some products are recycled Econyl yarn which is great for sustainability. A product such as INTRAlux Elite is a great polyamide matting solution combining 33% recycled yarn, superior fire resistance and excellent moisture absorption of 5.4l/m².
What is Polypropylene?
Polypropylene on the other hand is also very popular as the fibres give an effective scraping action due to their abrasive texture. This makes it an especially good performer when it comes to scraping dry dust. Entrance matting manufactured from Polypropylene fibres are generally durable and frequently used for internal areas, or used in longer lengths as a dirt-barrier in reception areas for maximum floor protection. However, this product has limited capabilities in absorbing moisture, and while extremely heavy-duty it can in some instances flatten. Products such as INTRAlux Rib offer a functional and attractive matting solution for use in lower traffic areas such as stairwells, lift lobbies, fire escapes etc. This is this is an example of a Polypropylene product.
